The mythical Phoenix has been incorporated into many religions, signifying eternal life, destruction, creation, and fresh beginnings. The Greek named it the Phoenix but it is associated with the Native American Thunderbird, the Egyptian Bennu, the Russian Firebird, the Chinese Fèng Huáng, and the Japanese Hō-ō. Continually morphing and remorphing, the Phoenix or Thunderbird represents the idea that the end is only the beginning. Much like this powerful myth, the symbol of the Thunderbird will be reborn over and over again in human legend and imagination. The Thunderbird is attributed with the ability to either create or destroy. This dual nature (give life, cause death) has made it a very prominent, powerful symbol.
Digger George, adventurer of the great unknown and collector of treasures, opened his warehouse doors to the public for the first time as Thunderbird Salvage a little over a year ago. Thunderbird Salvage is just as the name implies, a business based on reusing items that could have been lost to our historically decaying infrastructure. The crew is called upon to clean-out, breakdown and destroy places and things, but from this process comes a whole new life for many items. This is the way of the Thunderbird. The original warehouse location at 1714 N 9th St was a place where many bonds were made and treasures were found and sold, but alas, there comes a time for renewal in all life cycles, just as the phoenix rises from the ashes of that which came before them.
We are proud and excited to announce the grand opening of Thunderbird Salvage’s new storefront location at 2441 Frankford Avenue across from Atlantis (The Lost Bar) and Philadelphia Brewing Company. The NEW building is actually the OLD Frankford Baptist Church built between 1886-1889, designed by architecture firm Stearns & Castor with a past as storied as the store’s inventory is large. The convenient location and renovated interior make this storefront the perfect place for our treasures to shine. The old store / warehouse location will now serve as Thunderbird Headquarters for processing inventory which will be brought to the store WEEKLY, insuring the storefront will stay freshly stocked with the best of the best vintage furniture, clothing, electronics, vinyl, and everything inbetween!
Stop in Saturday the 11th for some salvaging, local DJs, food trucks, coffee, from 9am-5pm
