Philly launch for Joanna C. Valente's new collection of poems Sexting Ghosts (Unknown Press, 2018) featuring readings by Jenn McCreary, Raena Shirali, & Alina Pleskova

Joanna C. Valente is a human who lives in Brooklyn, New York, and is the author of Sirs & Madams (Aldrich Press, 2014), The Gods Are Dead (Deadly Chaps Press, 2015), Xenos (Agape Editions, 2016), and Marys of the Sea (The Operating System, 2017). They are the editor of A Shadow Map: An Anthology by Survivors of Sexual Assault (CCM, 2017). Joanna received a MFA in writing at Sarah Lawrence College, and is also the founder of Yes, Poetry, a managing editor for Luna Luna Magazine and CCM, as well as an instructor at Brooklyn Poets. Some of their writing has appeared in Brooklyn Magazine, Prelude, Apogee, Spork, The Feminist Wire, BUST, and elsewhere.

Jenn McCreary is a Philadelphia poet & the author of three books of poetry, several chapbooks, & one play, which has been performed in Oakland, Philadelphia, & Brooklyn. She serves as president of the board of directors for Small Press Traffic & in 2013 was named a Pew Fellow in the Arts.

Raena Shirali is a poet, editor, and educator from Charleston, South Carolina. Author of GILT (YesYes Books, 2017, & winner of the 2018 Milt Kessler Poetry Book Award), Shirali recently received a VIDA scholarship for the 2018 Sundress Academy for the Arts’ Residency. Her other honors include a Pushcart Prize, the Philip Roth Residency at Bucknell University’s Stadler Center for Poetry, and the Gulf Coast Poetry Prize. She lives in Philadelphia, where she serves as Poetry Editor for Muzzle Magazine and Poetry Reader for Vinyl.

Alina Pleskova is a Russian immigrant turned proud Philadelphian.​ Her first chapbook, ​What Urge Will Save Us, was published in 2017 by Spooky Girlfriend Press. She coedits bedfellows– a biannual print & online magazine that catalogs discussion of sex, desire, & intimacy– with Jackee Sadicario. ​Poems ​appear in American Poetry Review, ​Cosmonauts Avenue, Elderly, ​& more​. ​She has removed astrological indicators from her bio because it feels too revealing, but feel free to ask.
