2018 Cinedelphia Film Festival presents
The Allins Movie — Philly Premiere
(Dir. Sami Saif, 2017, Denmark, 74 min)
Following Todd Phillips’ landmark 1993 documentary Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies, one would assume that there isn’t much more to be said about the notorious punk rock icon who made a name for himself via vile acts of depravity, self-mutilation and violence towards members of his own audience. After years of threatening to kill himself on stage, Allin died of an accidental heroin overdose in 1993.
As the title suggests, director Sami Saif’s new film is less concerned with the late punk rocker’s antics and more interested in the lives of those he left behind. His brother Merle keeps his memory alive by continuing to perform with the Murder Junkies, and managed to turn the band’s merch and all things GG into a cottage industry. Meanwhile, his mother still struggles with grief at the loss of her son and, after years of trying to protect his tombstone from fans who want to lovingly deface it, has chosen to have it removed altogether.
Including early, pre-Murder Junkies performance footage and family photos, The Allins offers a further glimpse into a truly unique punk rock icon, and offers for the first time a chance for us to see GG as his family does: a man who possessed genuine compassion, and just maybe, a soul.
